ACB Radio Tuner Release Notes
Version 6.5.0
May 1, 2007
Thanks for downloading the ACB Radio Tuner. You will find it a convenient way to access the ACB Radio streams, both in broadband and modem forms. Your favorite stream is just a keystroke away. The following explains some of the basic features of the tuner.
WHAT'S NEW
The following new features have been added in version 6.5 of the ACB Radio Tuner:
- Addition of the ACB Radio World stream reachable by pressing CTRL+D.
- Addition of several new hotkeys.
- Windows Media Player hotkey changed to CTRL+E.
- Settings are saved in a custom INI file (ACB Radio Tuner.ini) to eliminate Windows registry writes. The file is placed in the user's Application Data folder in a directory called "ACB Radio Tuner". This insures that the program will operate under VISTA.
- Improved, cleaner visual user interface.
- The "No Extra Speech" setting is now saved if selected so that future sessions do not check for the availability of a screen reader.
INSTALLATION
The ACB Radio Tuner should run on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. It will not run on Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME. Simply run the executable program to install the tuner. It is recommended that you leave the settings at their default values.
OPERATING THE TUNER
You can run the tuner from the desktop, Quick Launch Bar, or in the start menu under PROGRAMS. In any case, the option is ACB Radio Tuner, so hitting the letter A while on the desktop, or doing CTRL+ESC, P for Programs, and A until you get to the ACB Radio tuner submenu, then pressing enter, will activate the tuner. Once the tuner is active, you will find it very easy to use. If you are using JAWS for Windows or Window-Eyes, you will get some extra feedback to the hot keys (unless you turned Extra Speech off). For example, by default, pressing F3 will make the tuner say "broadband connection"; however, you can turn off this extra voicing at any time. You have access to all the tuner functions via menus, and most via hot keys.
LISTEN TO MENU
This menu is where you choose what you want to hear. There are five different streams to which you can listen on ACB Radio.
- MainStream is where you can hear blindness related programming, such as technology shows, information shows, etc. Think of it as a talk show format.
- The Cafe is where you can hear music by blind musicians, both those you know and many that you do not.
- The Treasure Trove is where you can hear old time radio shows.
- ACB Radio Interactive is where blind and partially sighted DJs broadcast a wide variety of music, from Country to Classic Rock to a mix.
- ACB Radio World is content from all over the world, from music to talk.
OPTIONS MENU
Here is where you choose the connection type and player to use and control Extra Speech if you are using JAWS or Window-Eyes.
- Connection type - You can either choose from a modem connection (if you're using a phone line to connect), or broadband (if you are using DSL, cable modem, satellite, or some other high speed internet connection).
- There are three different players from which you may choose: Winamp, Real Player, or Windows media player. (note: you must have the player of choice on your computer for the chosen player to work. For example, if you try to use Winamp without it being installed on your computer, you will receive an error).
- Extra Speech - When the tuner starts, it will detect which screen reader you are running. If it finds Window-Eyes or JFW in memory, it will automatically select the appropriate option in this sub menu. It will then give you extra spoken prompts when you change an option, such as the player used to listen to ACB Radio. If you don't like this extra verbal feedback, select the "No Extra Speech" option from this menu or press CTRL+N.
- Reset to Tuner Defaults - This option will set the Player and Connection Type options in the tuner to their default values. These defaults are as follows: Winamp will be selected as your player of choice, your Connection Type will be set to Modem and your extra speech option will be automatically selected depending upon which screen reader is running. You may be asked to choose this option as guidance from technical support.

The Help menu lets you reach some ACB Radio web pages. You can also email technical support with questions about the tuner. There is also a Status option, which, when activated, will display a dialog box containing information about the connection type and player for which the tuner is configured. Finally, you may listen to a tutorial for instructions on the use of the tuner.
